2026 estimated tax due dates and set-aside planner

When are 2026 quarterly estimated taxes due?

For calendar-year individuals, IRS Form 1040-ES (2026) lists four dates: April 15, 2026; June 15, 2026; September 15, 2026; and January 15, 2027. The periods are not equal quarters: Jan 1-Mar 31, Apr 1-May 31, Jun 1-Aug 31, Sep 1-Dec 31. If a date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the IRS treats a payment on the next business day as on time.

IRS Form 1040-ES (2026): you don't have to make the January 15, 2027 payment if you file your 2026 return by February 1, 2027 and pay the entire balance due with it. Farmers, fishers and fiscal-year filers have different rules.

Facts from the IRS to know first

Because both income tax and self-employment tax apply, the right set-aside percentage depends on your income, deductions, state and household. A tax professional can help you pick one; the IRS worksheet in Form 1040-ES is the official way to work out a payment.

A simple routine

  1. Every time a client or platform pays you, move your chosen percentage into a separate savings account.
  2. At the end of each IRS period, total your net profit and compare the savings balance with the planner.
  3. Pay by the due date through your IRS online account, IRS Direct Pay or another option on IRS.gov/payments, and record the payment.
  4. Review the percentage with a tax professional once a year, or when your income changes a lot.

Questions

Is the third estimated tax payment due in September?

Yes. For 2026 the third payment, covering June 1 to August 31, is due September 15, 2026.

Why is the second period only two months?

The IRS splits the year into Jan 1-Mar 31, Apr 1-May 31, Jun 1-Aug 31 and Sep 1-Dec 31. The second period covers April and May only, so the June payment usually covers less income.

What percentage should I set aside?

There is no single right number. It depends on your income, deductions, credits, state taxes and filing status. The planner uses whatever percentage you choose; a tax professional can help you set it.

Can I skip the January payment?

Form 1040-ES (2026) says you don't have to make the January 15, 2027 payment if you file your 2026 return by February 1, 2027 and pay the entire balance due with it.

Do I owe self-employment tax on a small side business?

The IRS says you must file Schedule SE and pay self-employment tax if your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more.
