How much does Gumroad take per sale?
On a sale through your own Gumroad profile or a direct link, Gumroad charges 10% + 50¢ per transaction, and its help center says that does not include card processing (2.9% + 30¢) or PayPal fees. A sale that comes through Gumroad's Discover marketplace costs a flat 30%, processing included. On a $20 direct card sale that is $3.38 in fees, so you keep $16.62; on a $20 Discover sale you keep $14.00. There is no monthly fee.
| Gumroad fee (10% + $0.50) | $2.50 |

| Total fees | $3.38 |
| You receive | $16.62 |

Worked examples (direct card sales)
- $5 template: 10% ($0.50) + $0.50 + card 2.9% ($0.15) + $0.30 = $1.45 in fees, 29% of the price. The two fixed fees hit low prices hardest.
- $20 download: $2.00 + $0.50 + $0.58 + $0.30 = $3.38, so you keep $16.62. To keep a full $20 you would price it at $23.89.
- $100 course: $10.00 + $0.50 + $2.90 + $0.30 = $13.70, so you keep $86.30.
- High-volume month: once paid sales that month reach $20,000, the same $20 sale costs $2.38 (5% + 50¢ plus card processing). It resets on the 1st, and a refund that takes you back under $20,000 switches new sales back to 10% + $0.50.
Things that catch people out
- Discover sales cost three times as much. A sale Gumroad credits to its Discover marketplace is 30%, not 10%. Your sales CSV export shows the exact fee on every sale.
- Refunds: Gumroad's help center says its own fee on the refunded part comes back to you, but the payment-processing part does not.
- Affiliates share the fees. On an affiliate sale, fees are split in proportion to the commission. With a 30% commission, the affiliate carries 30% of the fees.
- Sales tax is handled by Gumroad. Gumroad says it has been merchant of record since January 1, 2025, collecting and remitting sales tax where it has an obligation. Income tax on your earnings is still yours; ask a tax professional how to report it.
Recording Gumroad sales
Record each sale at the price the customer paid and the Gumroad fee and processing as separate expenses, so your payouts reconcile. If you also sell on Etsy or Lemon Squeezy, keep fees per platform so you can see which channel costs most. Payment platforms may report your sales on Form 1099-K; see the 1099-K threshold checker.
