Worked examples
- $100 online, domestic card: 2.9% of $100 is $2.90, plus 30¢, so the fee is $3.20 and you keep $96.80.
- $100 online, international card that needs currency conversion: 2.9% + 1.5% + 1% = 5.4%, plus 30¢, so the fee is $5.70.
- Large invoice paid by ACH: the 0.8% fee reaches its $5 cap at $625, so a $2,000 payment costs $5.00, compared with $58.30 by online card.
Things that catch people out
- Refunds keep the fee. Stripe's pricing FAQ says the processing and currency conversion fees from the original payment are not returned when you refund.
- Disputes cost money even when the amount is small. Each dispute you receive costs $15.00, and responding manually costs another $15, which Stripe returns only if you win.
- Invoices add a separate fee. A Stripe invoice adds 0.4% per paid invoice on the Starter plan, on top of the card or bank fee.
- Custom pricing is different. These are standard rates. Businesses with large volume can ask Stripe for a custom package, and their rates will differ.
Recording Stripe fees
Record each sale at the full amount the customer paid and the Stripe fee as a separate expense. Stripe pays out the net amount, so a payout will not match your sales total. Match each payout to the payments and fees in it. If you sell through more than one platform, record fees separately for each one so you can see what each platform costs.
Questions
Does Stripe charge a monthly fee?
Not on standard pricing. Stripe's pricing page says it does not charge setup fees, monthly fees or closure fees; you pay per successful transaction. Optional products such as Billing, Tax or a custom domain have their own charges.
Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal or Square?
It depends on how you get paid. For an online domestic card, Stripe is 2.9% + 30¢. Compare the same payment in our PayPal and Square calculators, which use each company's current published rates.
What is Stripe's fee for international cards?
