How much does Etsy take per sale?

How much does Etsy take from each sale?

For a US seller with a US bank account, Etsy takes 6.5% of the item price plus shipping, 3% + $0.25 payment processing on the order total (sales tax included), and the $0.20 listing fee. That is roughly 9.5% of the order plus 45¢: on a $25 item with $5 shipping, $3.30, or 11.0%. If the order came from an Offsite Ad, Etsy adds 15% (12% for larger shops), capped at $100. If you refund through Shop Manager, Etsy credits the transaction and processing fees back automatically; the listing fee is credited only if you also cancel the order.

The four fees on a US sale

Offsite Ads15% or 12%, max $100Only orders where the buyer clicked an Etsy offsite ad and bought within 30 daysNetted from the sale

Etsy's help page also lists fees that only some sellers pay: a 2.5% currency conversion fee if your listing currency differs from your payment account currency, Etsy Ads (fees vary), shipping labels, subscriptions like Etsy Plus, a one-time set-up fee that varies by location, and regulatory operating fees for sellers in certain countries outside the US. Fees tied to the sale come out of that sale's earnings; listing fees, ads, labels and subscriptions are deducted from your balance when charged.

Arithmetic with the rates above, one item, US bank account. Processing is charged on the sales tax too; the transaction fee is shown on item + shipping, as on our calculator. The fixed 45¢ is why cheap items lose a larger share. Try your own numbers in the Etsy fee calculator, or set a price that covers fees in the handmade pricing calculator.

What happens to Etsy fees when you refund

SituationWhat Etsy Help says happens to your fees
Full refund through Shop ManagerTransaction and processing fees for the refunded transactions are automatically refunded to your Payment account.
Partial refund through Shop ManagerThe processing fee is credited proportionally and applied to the refund amount. Check the order in your Payment account for the exact credits.
Refund and cancel the orderListing fees are also credited automatically. Cancelling adds no extra fees.
Refund made outside Etsy (for example via PayPal after the 180-day window)Etsy says it won't be able to refund your seller fees.
Buyer filed a chargebackThe order may be non-refundable in Shop Manager; the buyer works it out with their bank or card company.

Two practical points. First, the refund money comes out of your Etsy Payment account; if the balance is short, Etsy charges your card on file for the rest. Second, refunding and cancelling are separate steps: a refund does not cancel the order, and the listing fee is only credited if you cancel too. The Etsy Help articles we checked do not say whether an Offsite Ads fee is credited on a seller-issued refund, so confirm that line in the order's fee breakdown before you count on it.

How to record fees and refunds in your books

  1. Record each sale at the full amount the buyer paid for item and shipping, then each fee as its own expense line (listing, transaction, processing, Offsite Ads). Your Payment account shows the breakdown per order.
  2. Record a refund as a negative sale, and each fee credit as a negative fee, so your fee totals match Etsy's monthly statement.
  3. Keep sales tax out of your income. Etsy's help page says taxes paid by the buyer are included in the order total and then subtracted back out in your Payment account, even though processing is charged on the total.
  4. Once a month, compare your totals to the Payment account's fees summary. If Etsy changes a rate, our fee change tracker logs it.

Questions

How much does Etsy take from a $25 sale?

For a $25 item with $5 shipping and no sales tax, US seller: $0.20 listing + $1.95 transaction (6.5% of $30) + $1.15 processing (3% of $30 + $0.25) = $3.30, about 11.0%. An Offsite Ads sale adds 15% or 12%.

Does Etsy refund fees when I refund a buyer?

If you refund through Shop Manager, Etsy Help says your transaction and processing fees for the refunded transactions are automatically refunded to your Payment account. For partial refunds the processing fee is credited proportionally.

Do I get the $0.20 listing fee back?

Only if you also cancel the order. Etsy Help says listing fees are automatically credited when you cancel the transaction; a refund alone does not cancel the order.

Can I refund an Etsy order after 180 days?

Not through Etsy Payments. Etsy Help says refunds can be issued before 180 days after the payment is processed. After that you would refund outside Etsy (for example PayPal), and Etsy won't refund your seller fees.

Does Etsy charge processing on sales tax?

Yes. The 3% + $0.25 processing fee is taken from the total sale price including shipping and any sales tax, according to Etsy Help.

Can I avoid Offsite Ads fees?

Shops that have never made $10,000 or more in any consecutive 365-day period can opt out in Shop Manager. Once a shop crosses $10,000, participation is required at the 12% rate. You only pay on orders from a buyer who clicked an offsite ad and bought within 30 days.
