How do I price a handmade item?

Add up materials, packaging, your time at the hourly pay you want, and a share of overhead. Then add the profit margin you want and the selling fees. On Etsy in the US that means the $0.20 listing fee, the 6.5% transaction fee on item price plus shipping, and 3% + $0.25 payment processing. Enter your numbers below to get the price to list.

How the price is worked out

Cost to make = materials + packaging + (minutes ÷ 60 × your hourly pay) + overhead per item.
Etsy fees = listing fee + transaction fee and processing percentage on item price plus shipping + the flat processing fee.
The calculator solves for the item price where what is left after fees, costs and postage equals your chosen margin of the item price.

Your time is counted as a cost, so the profit margin is money for the business on top of your pay. If you sell somewhere without Etsy fees, the last line shows that price too.

Questions

Should I pay myself an hourly rate in my prices?

If you leave your time out, the price only covers materials and the business can't pay you. This calculator uses the hourly pay you enter; choose a figure you would accept for the work.

Does the calculator include Offsite Ads?

No. Offsite Ads apply only to attributed orders (15% or 12%, capped at $100 per order). Use the Etsy fee calculator to see that case.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping you charge, and processing applies to the order total.

What profit margin should I use?

There is no standard figure we can cite. Pick a margin that leaves money for growth, slow months and mistakes, then check that the price still sells.

Is my data saved?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
